Recession Creates Families of TV-loving Techies

Cardiff (PRWEB) November 17, 2009
The nation’s telly fans are becoming an increasingly technology savvy and sophisticated bunch according to Argos, the UK’s leading general merchandise retailer. With the recession driving families to spend more time at home, television and film lovers are finding a compromise by opting for bigger screens, better pictures and more features at their fingertips.
Argos sells more TVs than any other brand, around one in five of all TVs bought in the UK in the six months to July 2009*, which is the equivalent to nearly two television sets for every minute of every day. Now Argos is reporting that it’s high-tech TVs that are seeing the nation through tough times.
Argos managing director, Sara Weller says: “Over the last six months TVs have been an important area for us with strong demand for higher levels of technology at a lower price. The recession has clearly been a factor here, as our customers have been spending more time in their homes and want to entertain their families the best they can. We also have the World Cup and Winter Olympics coming up, which are always ‘appointment-to-view’ occasions. Signs are that many customers are preparing early and glad to have something to look forward to.”
Argos also sold around one in four set top boxes in the UK and expects growth to continue in this area as digital switchover moves through the Granada region and into 2010.
