How can I get my computer to control other things in my house?
My biology teacher has his computer, which is not high tech or anything that he uses to turn off the lights in the room, including other computers and a whole bunch of other stuff. How do I do that? I want to control my television. If this is possible, what software do I need and approximately how much does it cost?

Whoa, that is going back, sounds like X10(?). There was a company 10 years ago that tried to go commercial but it didn’t work out too well. Google for x10

if your kinda expereinced you can modify it to your needs

A common technology that is emerging to allow this is Bluetooth. A form of standardized short-range wireless communication, anything that carries the Bluetooth flag can interact with any other Bluetooth device, and even be controlled by it.

Bluetooth adapters for computers run about $ 50, as for stereos, televisions, etc… I am not sure.

I would purchase a digital output card, such as this USB Device:

http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/201630

It costs 100$ , and has 24 channels. And comes with drivers you can use with .NET SDK, which is the free version of any one component (of your choice) of visual studio.

Now with something of this sort, you will need external relays, or transistors, the ouputs can handle up to 8.5 mA.

For controlling your television, you will need to communicate with it, either via infrared transmitter, or by wiring directly into the controls. Sounds like tons of trouble… Maybe it would be easier to just have it turn the TV on or Off via infrared.
