Am I an okay writer for a 14 year old?
I’m in enrichment language arts, but I can’t tell if that was because of my writing or what. I’m writing a book and the plot takes a lot of explanation that I really don’t have time for so I found a sample of my work that doesn’t really need to be described. Just tell me if it sounds quality or not:
By night we were in northern Arizona and tired as pack horses. We’d checked into a shady hotel called the ‘Shack Hotel’ if that gives you any clue. It was supposed to be done up all charming and nice, sort of a tiny, cute shack idea, but instead it was just a tiny shack, drop the cute.
“Well, how inviting” James rubbed his hands together sarcastically as Derek opened the door using a regular metal key, rather than the higher tech card key. There was peeling paint, a couple flies buzzing around the tiny, blocky television set, cigarette burns on all the furniture and beds and even bullet holes in one of the walls. And for some MYSTERIOUS reason, I got the feeling I wasn’t going to sleep well tonight.
So, if there are any, list the pros, and please gently list the cons. Thank you!

Pros: I think you know where you’re getting at and I feel your writing is good, however…
Cons:
~ You repeated ’shack’ 3 times in the same paragraph. Try and change it up a bit.
~ Also, your grammar is just slightly off and can be fixed with the help of a teacher or adult.
~ One last thing, if you want to be a writer without a degree, then the best thing to do is study a novel. How does the author write? Where do they use punctuation and how is it they manage to make their writing flow so neatly? All these tips seriously helped me when I was your age, and that makes all the difference.
